Abstract

As part of the academic and scientific community, the TH Köln constantly deals with processes of social change. In the design of competence-oriented learning settings, such as problem- project- or research-based learning, the TH Köln places social transformation processes and the students' perspective at the centre. Students should take an active role in the learning process and the responsibility for their studies, their learning and their cooperation. But there is still a lack of user-friendly solutions for such learning scenarios in the digital space. Even in the current Corona situation, digital teaching and learning still seem to take place in an experimental space, where often, in the sense of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT), face-to-face teaching is merely transferred into a digital format (cf. Hodges et. al 2020). The possibilities of online teaching are not fully exploited. Traditional scenarios as lectures in web conferences are preferred to student-centred learning via social platforms (cf. Goertz/Hense 2021). Competence-oriented learning seem not to be in the focus, maybe due to a lack of experience (cf. Kreidl/Dittler, 2021: 192) or due to the lecturing formats that dominate university teaching (cf. Kerres/Schmidt, 2012: 180). To change this perspective and to support social learning settings, this paper describes the implementation of a digital Teaching and Learning Community at the TH Köln, in which traditional forms of learning are combined with active forms by using the Learning Management System Ilias and the Social Learning Environment THspaces to create a flexible and modular learning environment.
