Abstract

E-learning platforms have gained momentum as standard tools to support organizational learning processes and offer a broad spectrum of different features. Many scientific publications and market studies deal with the multicriteria evaluation of the benefits of these software products to justify strategic investment decisions. In contrast, the problem of e-learning cost management is predominantly neglected. Therefore, we propose the Total Cost of Ownership-method (TCO-method) to cast light on the cost-effects of e-learning platforms. Based on the conceptual foundations of the TCO-method, domain specific problems and application potentials for e-learning cost management are elucidated. In addition, we present a case study to introduce the open source software product TCO-Tool, which provides advanced cost calculation procedures for TCO measurement. Finally, continuative research and development tasks are identified. The subject of this contribution is not solely of scientific interest, but also aims to accommodate the growing institutional demand for instruments to manage increasing e-learning costs.
